The Grindstone Lake Association was founded in 1994 by Eric Nilsson and Tom and Lorna Gleason who served as the first board. Since then each board has worked to increase membership and develop active committees. In 1996, GLA started participating in DNR’s Self Help Lakes Volunteer Monitoring Program, where five times each summer a volunteer tests for water quality indicators. Don MacIntosh is currently conducting the monitoring.

GLA is working to improve fish populations. Since the first fish cribs were placed in 1997, Bruce Johnson has led efforts to place about 300 toward the goal of 500. The board was instrumental in signage at the boat landing and has initiated a 20-year maintenance contract with the DNR for GLA to install the dock at the public landing prior to opening fishing and to remove it prior to ice-on.

A three year water quality and nutrient loading study was developed under a cooperative effort with the LCO Tribe and DNR. GLA organized volunteers to help with necessary monitoring. The initial study results were presented at the annual meeting in 1999 and the completed report was available in 2000. In 2001, GLA started an aquatic plant study to gather base line information and track changes. The board continually has backed tighter zoning regulations including ones for back lot and keyhole development and other measures to improve shoreline protection.

To help lake owners get better acquainted, Ray Moeller has been instrumental in organizing GLA’s picnic in 1999 and every year since. Newsletters are sent twice a year. The board continues to expand its activities and this summer helped Diver Dave Mathies organize a dive in Williams Bay that picked up a truck-load of trash.
